The brand
Dos Hombres expanded from Oaxaca mezcal to Jalisco tequila
Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul launched Dos Hombres in 2019, after working together on Breaking Bad. It began with mezcal from Oaxaca and expanded into tequila in 2026. The celebrity connection brought the brand its initial attention; the mezcal itself comes from the Velasco family’s work in San Luis del Río.
The four expressions are Espadín and Tobalá mezcal, plus Blanco and Reposado tequila. Both mezcals use agave cooked in an earth pit. The tequilas use Azul agave (A. tequilana) cooked with steam. An Añejo tequila is announced for 2027 and is not part of the current four-bottle range.

How it is made
How Dos Hombres is made
Mezcal: roasted agave, stone milling and copper stills
Gregorio Velasco Luis makes both Dos Hombres mezcals in San Luis del Río, Oaxaca. Espadín agave is harvested after six to eight years, cooked for about four days in an earth pit, then crushed with an animal drawn stone wheel.
The crushed agave ferments in wooden tubs for seven to ten days before copper distillation. Tobalá uses a different agave variety and is also unaged.
The Velasco family also makes Legendario Domingo’s Espadín in San Luis del Río. 1
Tequila: Azul agave and a blend of cooking methods
Julio Cova makes the tequila in Amatitán, Jalisco. Its Azul agave is cooked using a 75% autoclave and 25% brick oven split, followed by a roller mill.
Fermentation lasts 72–96 hours in open stainless steel tanks with wild yeast. Double distillation uses stainless steel first and copper second. Blanco rests for 30 days; Reposado spends three months in first fill American oak followed by 30 days settling.

The two mezcals
Dos Hombres Espadín vs Tobalá
Both are unaged mezcals made by Gregorio Velasco in San Luis del Río. Tobalá uses a different agave and is bottled at a higher strength; it also costs roughly six times as much.

Is Dos Hombres Tobalá worth $350?
For drinking value, we would spend less on another Tobalá. The cream ceramic bottle, brown illustrated label and wooden box make this an attractive gift for a Dos Hombres fan, but the price is difficult to justify if you mainly want to explore the agave.
Tobalá accounted for 1.78% of Mexico’s certified mezcal production in 2025. It was the third individually listed agave category, after Espadín and Cenizo. It is much less common than Espadín, but there are plenty of producers working with it. 3
Quiéreme Mucho Tobalá, for example, was offered at about $60 in our October US check, close to the price of Dos Hombres Espadín. It also comes in a decorated ceramic bottle. We would start there before paying $350 for Dos Hombres. 4
Dos Hombres still includes Tobalá in its range, and retailers continue to offer bottles. It has appeared in limited releases; the 400-bottle figure associated with the 2020 batch describes that release, rather than all Tobalá ever made by the brand. 5
