Aged bottle comparison
The cask matters as much as the age
Extra Añejo extends El Tesoro’s American ex-bourbon maturation to four to five years. Paradiso changes to French ex-Cognac oak, while Mundial Yamazaki uses Japanese whisky casks. Añejo is the lower-cost bourbon-cask reference; the full El Tesoro guide also covers Blanco and Reposado.
| Bottle | Maker’s maturation | US strength | Why choose it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Añejo (lower-cost reference) | 2–3 years, American ex-bourbon oak | 40% | More mature barrel influence, without the Extra Añejo price. |
| Extra Añejo | 4–5 years, American ex-bourbon oak | 40% | A roasted, coffee-and-chocolate direction in the maker’s notes. |
| Paradiso | 5 years, French ex-Cognac oak | 40% | A distinct Cognac-cask comparison, with butterscotch and herbal notes. |
| Mundial Yamazaki, 2025 | 12 months in Yamazaki 12-Year-Old sherry and wine casks | 42% | A specific Japanese-whisky-cask release, with sherry, nuts and spice. |
These ages describe the maker’s named releases. The 12 years in “Yamazaki 12-Year-Old” describes the whisky that previously occupied the casks; the El Tesoro tequila spent twelve months in those casks.
Extra Añejo and Paradiso start with the same distillery, then take different barrel paths
Both come from La Alteña’s tahona production. Extra Añejo is a blend aged four to five years in American ex-bourbon barrels. Felipe Camarena and Alain Royer of A. de Fussigny Cognac created Paradiso, which spends five years in French ex-Cognac casks. The tasting notes from El Tesoro describe coffee, dark chocolate and roasted almonds for Extra Añejo, and butterscotch, herbs, soft smoke and oak for Paradiso.

Mundial is a series of separate cask collaborations
Mundial pairs El Tesoro with casks from other distilleries. The editions change the tequila class and time in those casks as well as the previous spirit.
| Edition | Tequila and time in named casks | Maker’s flavor direction |
|---|---|---|
| Laphroaig (2021) | Añejo; twelve months in Laphroaig 10-Year-Old Scotch whisky casks. | Salty air and peat smoke. |
| Knob Creek Rye (2023) | Añejo; twelve months in charred oak Knob Creek Rye whiskey barrels. | Gentle sweetness and spice. |
| Basil Hayden Toast (2024) | Reposado; up to six months in toasted then flash-charred Basil Hayden oak barrels. | Cooked agave, cinnamon and crème brûlée. |
| Yamazaki (2025) | Añejo; twelve months in Yamazaki 12-Year-Old sherry and wine casks. | Sherry, toasted nuts, warm spices and red berries. |
Yamazaki 2025 is an Añejo matured for twelve months in authentic Yamazaki 12-Year-Old sherry and wine casks and bottled at 42% ABV. The press announcement calls it a one-time release. Carlos Camarena began the project, and Jenny Camarena brought it to its final stage with House of Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo.
El Tesoro also offers Single Barrel Reposado, which the maker distinguishes by individual barrel selection. Compare the barrel identification on a shop pick rather than treating every pick as the standard blended Reposado. The 85th Anniversary and older Mundial bottles are named special releases, so a current shop listing may concern remaining stock of an earlier edition.

Choose a gift by the recipient’s tastes, then by the edition
For a person who likes oak-aged tequila and wants a dependable starting point, Añejo or Extra Añejo makes more sense than buying a scarce edition solely for the name on its cask. Paradiso is a useful gift when the Cognac-barrel connection matters. Yamazaki is a more specific choice for someone interested in Japanese whisky and cross-category cask comparisons.
For cocktails, Añejo can bring mature oak to an Old Fashioned. Start with a restrained amount of sweetener. Serve the more expensive cask releases neat first, then adjust dilution to your preference.
Questions about El Tesoro’s aged releases
Is El Tesoro Paradiso older than El Tesoro Extra Añejo?
Paradiso is aged five years, while El Tesoro Extra Añejo is aged four to five years. The clearer distinction is the cask: French ex-Cognac oak for Paradiso and American ex-bourbon oak for Extra Añejo.
Is El Tesoro Mundial Yamazaki a twelve-year-old tequila?
No. The 2025 El Tesoro Mundial Yamazaki Añejo spent twelve months in casks that previously held Yamazaki 12-Year-Old Japanese whisky. The whisky’s age is not the tequila’s age.
Is El Tesoro Mundial Yamazaki stronger than the core El Tesoro Añejo?
Yes. The 2025 El Tesoro Mundial Yamazaki edition is 42% ABV; the established US El Tesoro Añejo is 40%.
Are all El Tesoro Mundial editions the same tequila?
No. El Tesoro Mundial editions use different casks and release-specific maturation and proof. Laphroaig 2021, Knob Creek Rye 2023, Basil Hayden Toast 2024 and Yamazaki 2025 should be compared as separate releases.
