The brand

A short range with a clear place of origin

Tres Agaves makes three regular 100% agave tequilas: Organic Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. All use Azul agave (A. tequilana); oak aging separates Reposado and Añejo from the unaged Blanco. The three US 750 mL bottles are 40% ABV, or 80 proof.

The brand says its certified organic agave is grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides and processed in certified organic facilities.

Barry Augus founded the brand. Trinchero Family Estates acquired it in August 2020, after handling its distribution through an earlier partnership. In March 2019, Tres Agaves opened Tequilera TAP, its own distillery in Amatitán, Jalisco, and announced Iliana Partida as master distiller. That opening also marked its move to exclusively organic tequila production.

Tres Agaves’ earlier producer was Hacienda de Oro, NOM 1522. Bottles from Tequilera TAP carry NOM 1614; the producer number on an older bottle helps identify that part of the brand’s history.

For one bottle to mix and sip, choose Reposado if oak and baked-fruit flavors appeal to you. Blanco also works neat if you prefer the maker’s fresh agave and citrus description. Añejo is a gift option for someone who enjoys the maker’s richer caramel, toasted-oak and dried-fruit profile.

Amatitán, Jalisco

Organic agave, fermentation and copper-lined stills

Harvesters remove the agave’s leaves to expose the piña, its heart. TAP opened in 2019 with an autoclave to cook the hearts under steam pressure and a four-stage roller mill to crush them and extract their juice. The distillery also installed a brick oven and a tahona, a large stone wheel for crushing cooked agave.

Yeast turns the agave sugars into alcohol in shallow fermentation vessels. The 2019 installation included stainless-steel and pine tanks; Tres Agaves’ current account describes shallow vessels followed by two distillations in copper-lined pot stills. Distillation concentrates the spirit, and water brings it to bottling strength. Blanco stays unaged; Reposado and Añejo then mature in oak.

Production and aging details

The 2019 opening announcement describes the installed equipment, including copper-coiled alembic stills. The brand’s current process account leaves the cooking and milling route for individual bottles unspecified.

The Reposado and Añejo pages give nine and eighteen months in Tennessee whiskey and Kentucky bourbon casks. The general process page gives ranges of seven to nine and fifteen to eighteen months, and describes Añejo’s casks as bourbon-only.

Why can Tres Agaves have more than one NOM?

Tres Agaves opened Tequilera TAP, NOM 1614, in Amatitán in 2019. Older bottles and retailer listings can still show Hacienda de Oro, NOM 1522, its earlier producer. The CRT’s October 1, 2026 register lists both NOMs; check the number on your bottle for its producer.

At home

Make a Margarita with the sweetener you have

Fresh lime and ordinary agave nectar

For this home starting recipe, first mix equal volumes of ordinary agave nectar and water. Shake 2 oz Tres Agaves Blanco, 1 oz fresh lime juice and ½ oz of that diluted syrup with ice. Taste and adjust the sweetness, then strain over fresh ice. Salt the rim if you enjoy it.

Tres Agaves Cocktail-Ready Agave Nectar

The brand’s Fresh Margarita recipe uses 2 oz Tres Agaves Blanco, 1 oz Tres Agaves Cocktail-Ready Organic Agave Nectar and 1 oz fresh lime juice. Shake with ice, taste for balance and strain over fresh ice. The Cocktail-Ready Nectar already contains water and citric acid; use it as supplied for this recipe.

Tres Agaves Organic Lime Margarita Mix

For the brand’s Organic Lime Margarita, shake 2 oz Tres Agaves Blanco with 3 oz Tres Agaves Organic Lime Margarita Mix and ice, then strain over fresh ice. The Lime Mix product instructions allow 3–4 oz mix with 2 oz tequila. The mix supplies lime, sweetener and water, so it replaces the lime-and-syrup combination above.

Blanco or Reposado in a Paloma

For a home Paloma starting point, pour 2 oz Tres Agaves Blanco, ½ oz lime juice and about 4 oz grapefruit soda over ice. Stir gently and taste before adding sweetener; grapefruit sodas differ in sweetness. Substitute Reposado in this drink or the fresh-lime Margarita when you want oak. Keep the other ingredients the same to compare the tequilas.

Añejo neat or in a stirred drink

Try Tres Agaves Añejo in a small neat pour before deciding on ice or water. For an Old Fashioned-style home starting recipe, stir 2 oz Añejo with 1 tsp of the diluted ordinary agave syrup described above and two dashes of aromatic bitters over ice. Express an orange peel over the glass and adjust the sweetness to taste.
