Tapatío comes from the Camarena family’s La Alteña distillery in Arandas, Jalisco, NOM 1139. Don Felipe Camarena founded La Alteña in 1937; his grandson Carlos Camarena is its master distiller. Its US range moves from two blancos to Reposado, Añejo and the long-rested Excelencia Gran Reserva. 1

Two blancos, with time in steel before bottling
Standard Blanco is 40% ABV and Blanco 110 is 55% ABV (110 US proof). Both rest for six months in stainless steel before bottling, so they have no barrel aging. Charbay says Blanco 110 is distilled at 114 proof and bottled at 110 proof. 2 6
Reposado spends eight months in used Jim Beam barrels, while Añejo spends eighteen months in them. Excelencia’s 2000 distillation spent five years in barrels and a further ten years in five-liter glass jugs before its 2015 bottling. The glass stage adds no further oak contact. Charbay’s U.S. product page marked the 2015 Excelencia bottling sold out when checked in October 2026. 2 3

Three generations at La Alteña
La Alteña grows blue agave in the Highlands of Jalisco. After Don Felipe, the distillery passed to his son Felipe J. Camarena Orozco and then to the next generation, including Carlos, Lilianna and Gabriela. Charbay is Tapatío’s exclusive US importer. 1
For Blanco 110, Charbay cooks agave for four days, ferments it with the family’s yeast culture and distills it twice in copper pot stills. 6

5. STAR-K’s guidance accepts qualifying unflavored, 100% agave tequila from CRT-approved producers without a separate kosher certificate. It prefers reliable certification for aged tequila and cristalino, and excludes flavored or mixto tequila and listed wine, cognac and dual-cask finishes. cRc advises reliable certification for aged tequila and requires it for flavored, rosa and cristalino tequila and mezcal. Passover approval is separate. Guidance checked October 14, 2026. Reposado, Añejo and Excelencia Gran Reserva are aged, so reliable certification is preferable. Excelencia’s 2000 distillation spent five years in barrels before ten years in glass and was bottled in 2015; check that release’s exact bottle. Product-level Tapatío certification remains unconfirmed.
