Mexico, Latvia and the United States ranked first, second and third in our 2023 estimate of tequila supply per adult. We converted tequila shipments into 1.5-ounce shots and divided by estimated adult populations. These figures estimate supply rather than how much residents actually drink. Newer figures for 2025 cover exports and US sales.
Tequila has expanded far beyond its party-shot reputation, with celebrity-backed brands and premium bottles reaching more drinkers. The recent US sales picture is more subdued: tequila and mezcal combined sold 32.106 million nine-liter cases in 2025, down 0.3% from 2024, according to DISCUS’s 2025 tables. The 2023 supply estimate covers tequila alone.

Latvia’s 2023 estimate was about 35 shots per adult, followed by the United States at about 29 and Panama at 8.8.
Mexico ranked first for tequila supply per adult in 2023
No prizes for guessing who comes out in first place. Tequila, the national drink of Mexico, is enjoyed by Mexicans in a wide variety of settings. From national holidays like Day of the Dead and Independence Day, to birthday celebrations and visits to the cantina, tequila is never far from life in Mexico. Tequila here is most often sipped straight, or with grapefruit soda added to make a paloma. While Mezcal is certainly on the rise in Mexico, it still has a long way to go to upset tequila as the country’s most popular spirit.
Latvia ranked second for tequila supply per adult in 2023
Latvia’s high tequila supply estimate may partly reflect cross-border liquor purchases. Around 15% of Latvia’s liquor sales appear to be to its Baltic neighbors, Estonia and Lithuania. Latvia has a lower tax rate on liquor, so people from neighboring countries commonly shop there. Those purchases can raise apparent supply per Latvian adult when some liquor is consumed across the border.
Latvia’s general alcohol consumption is also high: the World Health Organization places it second for alcohol consumption overall.
The United States ranked third for tequila supply per adult in 2023
The 2023 US estimate was about one shot’s worth of tequila supplied per adult every two weeks. In 2025 the US remained Mexico’s largest export destination, receiving 331.3 million liters in CRT’s country table. New Zealand ranked eleventh for tequila supply per adult in 2023, followed by the United Arab Emirates. France and Germany were thirteenth and fourteenth, the UK sixteenth, South Africa twenty-sixth and Ireland thirty-first.
The table includes countries with at least one million residents. A country’s omission tells us little about how much tequila its residents drink.

Methodology
The estimate uses CRT production and export figures for 2023 and World Bank population and age demographics for 2021. Adults were taken as age 20 and older. Countries with populations below one million were excluded. A shot was taken as 1.5 ounces, or 44.4 milliliters. Exports and production less exports are supply proxies, affected by stocks, maturation, tourism and re-exports; they do not directly measure how much residents drink.
