Mezcal production increased by 75% in 2022 according to statistics from COMERCAM (Mexico’s mezcal authority). While actual sales didn’t increase this much (it takes a while to get the mezcal produced to market), the largest brands saw big jumps in sales.
Sales of mezcal in the US increased by 52.6% in 2022 for the top 6 brands. The most popular mezcal brand in the US is Ilegal, followed by Del Maguey. The most popular brand in Mexico is 400 Conejos, owned by Casa Cuervo, part of Becle.
Of the top mezcal brands in the US, all but one are owned by global spirt giants Becle, Diageo, Pernod Richard and Campari. Banhez, the third most popular mezcal in the US is owned by a local Oaxacan cooperative.

Highest Selling Mezcal Brands in the US
The top mezcal brand by sales volume in the US in 2022 was Ilegal Mezcal, owned by Bacardi. In second place was Del Maguey, owned by Pernod Ricard. The top six selling brands of mezcal in the US are:

The most popular mezcal in top bars globally is Del Maguey, followed by Siete Misterios. This is according to Drinks International, who does an annual survey of 100 bars around the world that have won prestigious awards. 400 Conejos is the most popular brand of mezcal in Mexico. 400 Conejos is owned by Becle, the company behind Jose Cuervo. Becle owns Proximo Spirits, which distributes 400 Conejos in the US. 400 Conejos is the fifth most popular mezcal brand in the US but has been growing very fast. Expect to see this brand climb the rankings in the future.
Fastest Growing Mezcal Brands in the US
The fastest growing mezcal brand is Ilegal which increased sales by 80 thousand cases in 2022, representing growth of 85%. 400 Conejos was the fastest growing in percentage terms, with 2022 sales 125% more than 2021.

History: Around 2004 John Rexer started bringing mezcal from Oaxaca to his bar Café No Sé in Antigua, Guatemala. The brand Ilegal Mezcal was founded in 2006. The name references the less than official methods Rexer first used to bring unlicensed mezcal across the border from Mexico to Guatemala. Bacardi took a minority stake in Ilegal Mezcal in February 2017 and in September 2023 it purchased the remaining share of the brand.

Becle has used its massive distribution channels to help make 400 Conejos mezcal the number one selling mezcal in Mexico. “400 Conejos” means 400 rabbits. It is named in reference to an Aztec (Mexica) legend. In one version of the story Mayahuel, the goddess of agave, and Patacatl, the god of pulque and drunkenness, got together and had 400 rabbit offspring. The offspring are known as Centzon Tōtōchtin in Nahuatl. Mayahuel nursed the rabbits from her 400 breasts.
