Ocho estates and releases
An Ocho label names where its agave grew and when it was harvested. Single Estate bottles identify one field; Terroir Select bottles identify a growing region. Plata, aged expressions and special releases add another part of the story.

The field, the harvest and the expression
Ocho’s Single Estate bottles identify a field, or rancho, and the year its agave was harvested. Several estates can appear in one year as their plants mature. A field can return in a later vintage: El Vergel appears in Ocho’s archive in both 2007 and 2018.
The harvest year stays with an aged release. Las Raíces 2024 Barrel Proof Reposado, for example, was announced in 2025. Time in barrel is described by the expression and release, while the vintage records the agave harvest.
Terroir Select identifies a growing region and can bring together several fields. Zona Dorada debuted in 2025 around Los Alambiques; Río Lerma followed in 2026 with agave from five fields across Jalisco and Michoacán.
Two Ocho labels, explained
These bottle photographs show Las Raíces Barrel Proof Reposado and Río Lerma Puntas. Both are special, stronger releases; the established US Plata, Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo are 40% ABV.

Special releases
What is Ocho Puntas?
During distillation, the liquid’s composition changes as it leaves the still. Distillers separate the early portion, called the heads, from the main portion, called the heart. Ocho selects a small part near that transition for Puntas. It is an unaged tequila bottled at a higher strength than the core Plata.
“High proof” describes alcohol strength. “Puntas” describes the portion selected during distillation. Ocho Puntas 2024 was diluted with deep-well water to 54% ABV, so a Puntas release can still have water added before bottling.
| US release | Agave origin | ABV / proof | Suggested launch price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 · first release | La Ladera · Single Estate · agave harvested in summer 2021 | 50.5% / 101 | About $60 |
| October 2023 | Mesa Colorada · Single Estate | 53% / 106 | About $75 |
| 2024 | Mirandillas · Single Estate | 54% / 108 | About $75 |
| 2026 | Five Río Lerma fields · Terroir Select | 55% / 110 | About $75 |
The first Puntas used the 2021 La Ladera harvest and was released in 2022. The 2026 release was Ocho’s first Puntas since 2024. Its 55% ABV is the maximum permitted for tequila. The maker describes cooked agave, citrus, tamarind, ripe pineapple and herbal notes.

What was in the Barrel Select casks?
Old Fitzgerald is Heaven Hill’s Kentucky bourbon brand. The barrels Ocho used had held its ten-year-old wheated bourbon, then aged Ocho tequila for twelve months. Widow Jane is another bourbon collaboration.
| Ocho edition | Previous contents of the casks | Release detail |
|---|---|---|
| Old Fitzgerald Añejo | Old Fitzgerald ten-year-old bourbon, Spring 2023 Decanter Series | 12 months of tequila aging; 2023 harvests released in 2025 |
| Widow Jane Reposado | Widow Jane bourbon | First released in 2022; eight weeks and eight days in barrel. El Nacimiento 2022 edition: 45.5% ABV. |
| Widow Jane Añejo | Widow Jane bourbon | Followed in 2023. El Nacimiento 2022 edition: 48% ABV. |
The 2020 collection also includes Tropical Añejo in rum casks, Continental Añejo in Cognac casks, and Transatlantic Añejo using both types. Cognac is a grape brandy.

Choose the expression and strength first
For a first Ocho bottle, start with the core expression you want: unaged Plata or an aged tequila. To explore the fields, compare Single Estate Platas from the same harvest year at the same strength. Confirm the estate and vintage with the shop before ordering.
Choose Puntas for Ocho’s selected early distillation cut without barrel aging. Choose Barrel Proof Reposado for a stronger aged release: its first US Las Raíces batch was 50.5% ABV. For a particular cask influence, choose a Barrel Select edition by its previous spirit—Old Fitzgerald bourbon or Ferrand Cognac, for example. Check the actual label: Puntas strengths and aged releases vary by edition.
Ocho tasting ideas
A horizontal tasting: compare Single Estate Platas from different fields in the same harvest year. La Mesa and Capulín 2025 are two documented examples. Keeping the expression and strength alike makes the growing places easier to explore.
A vertical tasting: compare different harvest years from one estate. El Vergel 2007 and 2018 illustrate the idea, although finding older bottles may take time. Use the same expression for both.
Explore aging: compare Plata and Reposado from the same estate and harvest, such as Corralillos 2023. Taste small pours side by side in matching glasses and note how the agave, spice and wood flavors differ.
Questions about Ocho labels and releases
Does Ocho use just one estate each year?
No. Ocho harvests several estates in a year as their agave matures. A named estate can also return in a later harvest, as El Vergel did in 2007 and 2018.
Does every Ocho estate produce every expression?
No. Ocho’s available expressions vary by estate and harvest. Ocho’s archive lists El Bajío 2018 in all four core styles, while La Mesa 2025 is listed as Plata.
Is Tequila Ocho Puntas 2026 a single-estate tequila?
No. Ocho Puntas 2026 is a Terroir Select release made from five fields in the Río Lerma zone across Jalisco and Michoacán.
Does an Ocho 2024 label mean two years of barrel aging by 2026?
No. Ocho’s vintage marks the agave harvest year. The expression and specific release determine maturation, and tequila gains no further barrel age once bottled.
Is Ocho Barrel Proof Reposado the same as Ocho Puntas?
No. Ocho Barrel Proof Reposado is aged tequila; its first Las Raíces 2024 batch was bottled at 50.5% ABV. Ocho Puntas is unaged tequila selected from an early portion of distillation.
