Clase Azul Master Artisans led the January 2024 tequila price comparison at an average listed price of $16,860 per 750 mL bottle. It was more than $5,000 more expensive than the second-place Patrón en Lalique Serie 3, at $11,101. Dos Armadillos Sterling Silver rounded out the top three. All of the most expensive tequilas are made from 100% agave.
Tequila has long been an artisanal product that takes great care, skill and time to produce. Add to that some limited-edition and over-the-top bottles and you have the recipe for some seriously expensive juice.
The January 2024 comparison covers standard 750 mL bottles with listings in at least a few stores, with outliers excluded from the average prices. These are listed retail prices from Wine Searcher.

The top three are all 100% agave extra añejo tequilas, aged at least three years in oak barrels. Clase Azul Master Artisans was limited to 300 bottles, with its first-edition ceramic bottle designed by Ángel Santos Juarez. Patrón en Lalique Serie 3 had a 299-bottle release.
By contrast, the most expensive mezcals in the world looked like a bargain at those prices: the priciest was aged for 30 years and listed for less than $1,000.

Which brand had the most expensive tequilas?
Clase Azul had the most entries in the January 2024 top 20, including number one. Eight Clase Azul releases made the top 20; seven were limited releases. Clase Azul Ultra ranked 16th and is part of the brand’s regular lineup.
Patrón had the second-most entries, with three in the January 2024 comparison. All three were in the top six and belonged to the Patrón en Lalique series. Separately, Patrón ranked fourth by global sales volume in 2025.

Most expensive celebrity tequila
Código 1530 14-Year Extra Añejo from George Strait was the most expensive celebrity tequila in the January 2024 comparison, at $3,874 and ninth overall. The American country music singer’s label also made the 12th-ranked Código 1530 13-Year Extra Añejo. Código 1530 is also noted for its early move into pink tequilas, although these are much more affordable.
NBA legend Michael Jordan’s Cincoro Extra Añejo came next at $1,586, followed by Elon Musk’s Tesla Tequila at $1,474 in the January 2024 comparison. I compiled a list and counted over 50 different celebrity tequila brands, so there is definitely some competition.
Which tequila classes were most expensive?
Extra añejo dominated the January 2024 ranking: 17 of the top 24 tequilas were extra añejo, meaning they had been aged at least three years in oak barrels. Many were aged much longer. The oldest in the top 24 was Fuenteseca’s 21-year-aged edition.
Most expensive blanco tequila
The blanco class seems largely ignored among pricey tequilas. In the January 2024 comparison, the most expensive blanco, or silver tequila, was Casacahuin 11 Brix at $478 per bottle. Very expensive cristalino and joven tequilas can look like blancos, but they are at least partly aged and belong to different classes.
Most expensive reposado tequila
Clase Azul 20 Aniversario was the highest-priced reposado in the January 2024 comparison. Reposados are usually cheaper because they spend less time aging, but this limited collectible bottle is aged just four months and was listed at $4,842, ranking eighth overall. It was also the youngest aged tequila in the top 24.
Most expensive cristalino tequila
Padre Azul Cristalino was the most expensive cristalino in the January 2024 comparison, averaging $1,475. This is an añejo tequila that has been charcoal filtered to remove all color and provide an even smoother taste. Just 1,000 bottles were produced, which are topped with a Swarovski crystal skull stopper.
Cristalino style tequilas are relatively new and are already very popular in Mexico, and increasingly popular in the US.

Most expensive joven or gold tequila
Clase Azul MGM Resorts was the most expensive joven tequila in the January 2024 comparison, at $5,693 and seventh overall.
The bottle was released to be exclusively available at MGM Resorts in Las Vegas including Bellagio, ARIA and the MGM Grand. A shot of Clase Azul MGM Resorts was listed at $60 a pour in the January 2024 account.
Joven tequila, also known as gold, is a class of tequila that mixes unaged blanco tequila with tequila that has been aged in oak barrels for more than two months.
Clase Azul MGM Resorts is made from 20% blanco tequila, 50% reposado (aged eight months) and 10% Clase Azul Ultra (aged five years in sherry casks).
Top brands’ most expensive bottles in January 2024
Super premium

- The highest-priced bottle of Jose Cuervo was Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario, which was listed at $2,391 (less than half its price a year before January 2024).
- Jose Cuervo is the oldest tequila producer in Mexico, and hence the world, and this 250th anniversary edition proves it.
- The blend includes some tequila that is over 100 years old found in the company’s storage cellars.
- The highest-priced bottle of Don Julio tequila was Don Julio Real, which was listed at $1,134.
- In June 2021 it was announced that Don Julio Real would be discontinued, driving further scarcity. The original retail price of the bottle was $350.
- The highest-priced Don Julio 1942 was the Ultima Reserva Extra Añejo, which was listed at $503.
- The highest-priced bottle of Herradura was the 150th Aniversario Extra Añejo, at $512.
- This tequila was aged for 100 months in American white oak barrels.
- The next most expensive tequila from Herradura was Seleccion Suprema, listed at $365.

More affordable
- Dos Hombres makes mezcal; its highest-priced bottle was Tobala, listed at $361.
- Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul’s entry-level mezcal was listed at just $58.
- The highest-priced bottle of 1800 tequila was Milenio Extra Añejo, which was listed at $222.
- The 1800 brand sits in Jose Cuervo’s line up and strikes a more affordable price than its most premium brands.
- The highest-priced bottle of Sauza was XA Edicion Limitada Extra Añejo, which was listed at $180.
- Outside this limited-edition bottling, the most expensive Sauza was the añejo at just $20.
- Sauza also has other ranges, the slightly more premium Hornitos (most expensive was the Añejo Cristalino at $34), and the Tres Generaciones line (most expensive was the Cenobio’s Batch Blanco at $68)
- The highest-priced bottle of Avion was Reserva Tequila Cristalino Añejo, which was listed at $139.
- In 2015 Avion also released a special Mayweather Edition which cost $1,500. The bottle was released to mark boxer Floyd Mayweather’s 50th professional fight.

Budget ranges and limited editions
- Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Añejo was the highest-priced regular-range bottle in the January 2024 comparison, at $66.
- In its regular range, Milagro, or more fully Leyenda del Milagro, is a budget-friendly brand that doesn’t stray too far into the priciest tequilas.
- The limited editions Milagro Romance and Milagro Unico Joven were listed at $800 and $300 respectively in January 2024. Romance keeps añejo and reposado separate in the same bottle.
- The highest-priced bottle of Casamigos was the Añejo expression, priced at $61.
- By January 2024, Casamigos had been wildly successful with its core range and had yet to branch out into special editions.
- Casamigos also has a mezcal which was listed a little higher at $67.
- The highest-priced bottle of The Rock’s Teremana was the añejo, which was listed at $42.
- Like Casamigos, this relatively new brand had been sticking to its core range in January 2024 and prided itself on offering accessibly priced tequilas.
Why are the tequilas so expensive?
The top 20 in the January 2024 comparison averaged over $5,350 per bottle.
What buyers may be willing to pay
- If brands can charge thousands of dollars for a bottle they will. To me, the number of expensive releases suggests there’s no shortage of buyers.
- The Patrón en Lalique series had a recommended retail price of $7,500. January 2024 asking prices for the second and third series were well above that level. I see that gap as a sign of demand for collector bottles.
Bottle runs are limited editions
- Almost all of the most expensive tequilas are limited editions, increasing scarcity and definitely the price. For example:
- Patrón en Lalique series 1 to 3 were limited to 500, 299 and 299 bottles for each respective release
- Clase Azul Master Artisans was limited to 300 bottles
- Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario were limited to 495 bottles
- Padre Azul Cristalino was limited to 1,000 bottles
Bottles are being sold as works of art
- Take away the bottle itself and few people would pay for just what’s inside. Clase Azul has led this charge and has focused on partnering with emerging and established artists to create its bottle designs.
- Clase Azul Master Artisans’s first-edition ceramic bottle was designed by renowned ceramicist Ángel Santos Juarez.
- Many drinkers will choose to keep the bottles for display long after they finish what’s inside, if they even open it.
The bottles themselves are expensive
- While they don’t quite justify the whole price, expensive tequila bottles are often very labor-intensive. For example the bottle for Casa Dragones Pepita Joven (listed at around $1,100 in January 2024) apparently takes 100 hours to make.
- Making unique bottle runs in low numbers also adds to the price, as the design and setup costs are spread over a smaller number.
Bottles as status symbols
- It’s long been a trend in ritzy clubs such as in Las Vegas to order outrageously priced bottles and let everyone know about it. Oversized, easily identifiable bottles such as Clase Azul can be seen across the club, and are definitely attention getters.
January 2024 prices at online stores and marketplaces

In January 2024, Patrón en Lalique Serie 2 was listed for over $3,000 less at Old Town Tequila than through Drizly in San Francisco. Wide price differences are to be expected with such limited releases.
